(Chautauqua, N.Y.) Mitchell Covert shot an 86 and Butler County Community College teammate Mason Phillips an 87 in the first round Tuesday of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III men’s championship tournament at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course in Chautauqua, N.Y.

The Pioneers’ Taylor Voloch had a 114 and Leah McClellan a 127 in the first round of the open women’s championship tournament at Chautauqua, where Voloch placed 14th in 2025 to become the college’s first female All-American in golf.

The 18 individual men’s and women’s golfers with the lowest score after Friday’s fourth and final round earn the prestigious postseason award.

Covert is tied for 57th place with Channing Brainard, Niagara County Community College, Sanborn. N.Y.; Jaxson Faulk, Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College; Dietrich Bethge, Rock Valley College, Rockford, Ill.; and Alvin Ratanaphan, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, N.Y.

Phillips is tied for 60th place with Bret Worthington, Westmoreland County Community College, Youngwood, Pa.

Covert parred six holes, including four on the back nine, where he also had a birdie. Phillips parred five holes and had a birdie on the front nine.

Jake Morgan, of County College of Morris, Randolph, N.J., fired a 2-under 70 to lead the field of 78 men’s golfers after the opening round.

 Voloch is in 28th place and McClellan 31st  in a field of 33 led by Sarah Wang, Oxford College of Emory University, Oxford, Ga., with a 79.

Covert and Phillips earned berths in the national tournament during the NJCAA Division III Region 20 championship at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo on May 19.

Covert is a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City; Phillips, of Knoch; Voloch, of Moniteau; and McClellan, of Butler.

The Pioneers’ spring golf season features regional play and a regional tournament. BC3’s fall golf season concludes with the WPCC championship.
