Title IX

What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Education Amendments 1972 (20 U.S.C. 1681 et seq.) and its implementing regulations, 34 C.F.R. Part 106, prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of Federal financial assistance. It is the landmark legislation that bans gender based discrimination in schools and colleges.

Title IX benefits all genders. It requires educational institutions to maintain policies, practices and programs that do not discriminate against anyone based on sex. Under this law, all genders are expected to receive fair and equal treatment in all aspects of higher education.

Title IX states:

Under Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Except as provided elsewhere in the Title IX regulations, no person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, or other education program or activity or employment opportunity available through a recipient that receives federal financial assistance.
