Now Offering Preparation for Grades 4-8 English Language Arts & Social Studies and grades 5 and 6 Mathematics & Science for add-on option for Grades PK-4 Certificates!

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has announced a Grades 5-6 testing add-on option for the Grades PK-4 certificate only. PreK-4 certificate holders may take two modules: Grades 4-8 English Language Arts and Social Studies (5154) and Mathematics and Science (5155) to add grades 5 and 6. PreK-4 candidates may take these modules during or after the PK-4 program and apply for them simultaneously, but the evaluation of the Grades Prek-4 requirements will be evaluated first and the Grades 5-6 add on certificate will only be granted once the PK-4 certificate is approved.

Substitute Teaching Permits For Prospective Educators in Pennsylvania

The legislature has passed a new law that creates substitute teaching permits for prospective educators. This new permit is for education students in approved Pennsylvania teacher preparation programs who meet the specific requirements in the law listed below.


Currently enrolled in a PA college or university teacher preparation program regionally accredited and approved by PDE;

Must have completed sixty semester hours or the equivalent;

Must be eligible under section 111 (criminal history) and section 1109(a) (good moral character, 18 years of age, US citizen, etc.).

The permit is issued by the chief school administrator of a school district, area vocational technical school, or intermediate unit.

Passing Scores

Effective immediately and retroactively the PAPA and Core Academic Basic Skills passing score is:

  • 193 for the PAPA Basic Skills Mathematics (test 8002)
  • 142 for the Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics (test 5732)

Mrs. Cheryl Bachman completed her degrees in Elementary and Special Education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Cheryl teaches second grade in a self-contained classroom at Moraine Elementary School in the Slippery Rock Area School District. Cheryl’s expertise in all academic areas and her experience with differentiated instruction enables her to be an excellent tutor for teacher candidates preparing for their exams. Her success rate with the PECT Special Education exams is outstanding.
